8 Extremely Interesting State Issues

by Glen Justice // Apr 14, 2015 State & Local

It’s no secret that state governments struggle with some weighty issues, from budgets and taxes to education and healthcare. But in many states, the range of issues goes much farther.

CQ Roll Call’s 50 State Project asked reporters in every state to rank the top 5 issues in their locale (you can see the full report here). The result was a compelling portrait of the state issues that occupy legislatures and governors — and they are not always when you would expect.

For example, did you know that homelessness is a problem in Hawaii? Or that Kentucky struggles with Heroin addiction? To see some of the most interesting examples, page through the slideshare above.

States passed more than 45,000 bills and resolutions in 2013 and 2014, while Congress passed just 352 measures. Fully 38 states and the District of Columbia passed more legislation than Congress.
